Four Clit Orgasm Types: Which One Are You?

Clit POWER. A true orgasmic powerhouse, the clitoris deserves all the attention after – in past ages – this central structure for women’s & clit-havers’ pleasure was both belittled, “discovered” by dudes literally millions of years after it came into existence, ignored, and even mutilated.

It’s the easiest gateway into more pleasure – yet still, the clitoris is almost never discussed in U.S. health classes, and glossed over in anatomy textbooks for medical professionals. Some surveys report that 30% of literate adults cannot locate the clitoris on a clear diagram.

And even if you are in the know 🧠🦪 about clitoral pleasure generally🥳, then another un-discussed area is the wide variety of different styles for clit stimulation. I’ve experienced some major clitoral stimulation flops over the past dozen years – like, vibes with glowing reviews just being “meh” for me until I understood my own style. Everything my research, reading, and self-play over has revealed about how-to find the right clit stimulation style:

Clit Stim’s Valid and NORMAL for Reaching Orgasm.

Up to 75% of cis women report not orgasming reliably if their clitoris is left out in the cold, untouched.

Gotta admit, I’ve found tremendous pleasure from G-spot orgasms, but clitoral orgasms are just fantastic – and honestly, more reliable to achieve. No one is broken or *gasp* childish (as Sigmund Freud thought, 🤮) if they can’t have pure vaginal climaxes.1 The clitoris is not a small spot only, not an “immature” penis, but a deeper internal structure:

“Apples and oranges” is cliche because the analogy works: Here, our very different fruits are 1.) clitoral vs. 2.) vaginal orgasms. You might strongly like one fruit over the other fruit 24/7; or you might prefer one sometimes, and the other other times, or:

Maybe you want a 🍊🍎full fuckin’ fruit salad🍓🍌🍑🫐🍍🥝, with bananas and berries and even kiwi or pineapple too. You shouldn’t have to feel limited.

Pleasure-wise, there is no *one* correct way. Maybe you in the mood for blended stimulation (clitoral + G-spot), maybe clitoral only, maybe it’s clitoral first and then vaginal play, maybe it’s nipple sensation or anal plugging or simply sensual massage & cuddling: What matters is if it calls to *you* & your taste 🤪!

Clitoral Orgasm Techniques

Clit stimulation reigns supreme as the preferred way to climax for *most* clit-havers – yet, learning your own route to orgasm might also involve a wrong turn:

Where you’re like, Well *this* is not the right path for me. 🤦In all the reading I’ve done about irl folks’ toy experiences, the sharpest fork in the road is between clitoral broad stimulation vs. pinpoint stimulation fans – #1 and #2, below. But we can’t forget clit suction or blended methods, too!

More on the many ways of bad-ass clitoral climax:

#1. The Rubber.

I cannot get off from pressure being applied just on my visible clitoris. I need more: more coverage, more motion. This is the secret that let me go from “What is the deal with people liking the We-Vibe Tango so much” to “Oooooooooh now I get it.”

Clitoral rubbing is to stroke up and down the clitoris and the inner labia – perhaps even back to the vaginal opening!!! This clitoral “stroking off” feels most natural to me if I’m moving a rumbly vibrator, thrust-massaging it up and down over my clitoral hood, back to over my vaginal opening so I’m stroking into where my inner labia flare out.

This several inches of moving length means it’s a wider area, broader stimulation. So it’s no surprise that I also love to grip & jerk on the wide head of a Magic Wand. I like the expanse, how it covers all the nerves from my clit itself, to my sensitive inner labia and if the vibrator is strong enough, the vibes will carry back to my asshole, too.

Clitoral rubbing: rub up and down right under the clitoris. Clit here represented by a goji berry 😄 Some clits pop out to be more visible when aroused, while others are always covered (“hooded”)!

Rubbing is similar to grinding, since both rely on movement. Except, grinding is usually hands-free: you can grind on a pillow that your thighs are clasped around, on a vibrator pad you’re sitting down on, on a fantasy grinder you’re on top of.

#2. The Pinpointer.

“Pinpoint” clitoral stimulation means you’re focusing specifically on the clitoris 📍– the clitoral glans (=clit-head), to be exact. That’s the part of the clitoral structure that you can actually see, whereas the clitoral shaft and crura (“legs”) lie buried below the surface! I often use the “bullseye” emoji 🎯 to convey pin-pointy-ness,

Which some people llooooove love love: see how the We-Vibe Tango bullet vibrator is, with its firm tip for homing in on the clit, for example!

We-Vibe Tango X rumbly bullet vibrator

This clitoral orgasmic type is most fascinating to me, since it’s the polar opposite of my own taste. A zumio-style zingy tip, or a Dame Kip pointy-point is the only vibrator experiment I’ve found myself wanting to fleeeeee from. 🏃〰️😱 *Judgy* me is like, Who are these people who want the sharp things near their genitals. But, I’ve met pinpoint-stimulation fans, I know people who actively seek out safe sharpness – so it’s a very personal thing, simply different tastes!

#3. The Suction-Lover.

Clitoral suction and air pulse vibrators are hands-down the most loved sex toy type for clitoral stimulation, ever since Womanizer vs. Satisfyer toys became a thing back in the early 2010s.

Air pulse toys are new technology because they surround the clit, and puff lil bursts of air onto it – technically touch-free, but shockingly intense if u get a good one (and position it correctly, with its mouth surrounding the clit glans!).

Strongest air pulse vibrators - Inya Rose, Womanizer Premium 2
Air pulse, or pressure wave, toys are frequently called “clitoral suction.”

Often called “suction,” they may suck very lightly, but they’re really outward air pressure. Bigger-suction toys require a cylinder that surrounds clit and usually vulva too, venting the air outward: traditionally called a “pussy pump,” a.k.a. a vulva pump.

If ur not sure which to get, I 10/10 will leap up and down with excitement over the “Ultimate Clitoral Oral” set that combines a licking vulva pump + vibrating tongue (light vibration) with the Zen Rose air pulse vibrator. The pump is for getting really turned on and licked nicely, and then you finish with the intensity of this (easier-to-clean) Rose toy’s pulses – which have the rumbliest vibration built-in.

#4. The Blender.

Not the threatening macerator of food-stuffs: Here blending is mixing two erogenous play types, to create dual/ double stimulation.

Like this except facing toward the belly & clit!! Pictured are a duo that’s given me like a thousand orgams over the years.

The classic blended orgasm path is clitoral + Gspot vibration in a single toy with two different vibrating segments – as in a “rabbit vibrator.” This way, you’re literally stimulating more nerve endings, from the clit to the vag. and in between:

The clitoris is numbers 1 thru 4; #5 is the urethra; and #s 6 and 7 are the vagina. Clitoris full structure + urethra, vagina, and uterus, based on Helen O’Connell’s fMRI work, at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clitoris_3_D_-_Helen_O%27Connell.jpg.

That can work, though sometimes “rabbit” dual-stimulation vibrators are tough to get a good fit from, if your clit is farther away from your vagina. So for example, I think the St Tropez rabbit is the best dual vibrator ever, but it’s not for folks whose favorite clit stimulation point is more than the median 1.67″ inches away from the top of the vaginal opening.

You can also: have a partner finger you vaginally, while clit vibrating; buy two different vibrators and hold them separately; or go with a pair like the hands-free (while you’re laying back in bed!) Gsqueeze silicone plug with any clit toy you enjoy, or with your own fingers!

Your Clitoral Stimulation Style is Right, Too.

This is far from an all-inclusive list! What other clitoral play types have I skipped, besides to rub it, grind it, pinpoint it, suck it or pulse air on it, and combine it with vaginal pressure? Let me know if I’ve missed your personal style!

Extra Tips for Reaching Clitoral Orgasm

Your exact spot and clit stimulation size matter, but so do relaxation level, speed, and building intensity.

If you’ve never had an orgasm, don’t despair. Here’s a quick list of tips that will help almost everyone with a clitoris:

Clitoris anatomy labeled en
Clitoris anatomy, with clitoral hood and labia sketched in black line, on top. By Amphis, released to public domain, view rights at wikimedia.
  1. Know where your clitoris is! It’s of course hard to see by bending your head, so a flipped phone camera (you of course don’t have to take pics if u don’t want!) or a handheld mirror will let you see the structures, making what you’re working with clearer. Go ahead and feel with your fingers at the same time, and feel free to play with moving your labia to the side, and/or pulling your clitoral hood back if the head of your clit isn’t immediately visible. (That’s normal.) Labia of all shapes and sizes are normal too!
  2. Learn how to get more aroused. It’s key to let yourself be relaxed & comfortable: Find time that can be entirely yours, and unwind by whatever makes you feel good: a warm shower, music you like, audioporn, a scented candle or aroma, soft blankets – really, anything that’s good for you. Think of what turns you on, embracing any fantasy you enjoy.
  3. Rub it, slowly and gently. You want to stroke your clitoris, gently massaging with one or two fingers. Think about where you like more pressure or touch: Do you get more sensation from right on top, top and underneath, around the sides, or elsewhere? Then build up speed if it feels good to rub and stroke. You can either do this just manually (your own fingers), or you can use a vibrator to stroke over the clit. (This is my favorite, I like the Pillow Talk Sassy’s wide bulb best for deep rumbles, clitorally.)
  4. Lubricant is nothing to be ashamed of. If you like rubbing faster, then a safe water-based or hybrid lubricant keeps you wetter in the presence of friction – silicone usually creates some friction, so lube is absolutely essential for clitoral grinder toys.
  5. Clench down your pelvic floor muscles, or “kegel.” This builds tension over the whole vulva, and absolutely can amplify how turned on you are as a byproduct. Doing sets of kegel (usually pronounced “kay-gull”) clenches a couple times a week can help build strength! More PC muscle (PC= pubococcygeus) strength typically helps folks reach stronger orgasms, plus you’re less likely to pee a little when you sneeze hard. Repeat sets of 10–20 second clenches, 3 reps with a short rest in between, every couple days for several weeks. 🚩**Do not do kegels if you have issues with your vagina clenching up involuntarily: spasming or contracting when you don’t intend it to.**
  6. Kegel lightly while rubbing the clitoris, or pressing a vibrator into the clitoris. This is a type of dual stimulation, since the kegeling engages the muscles around the vagina. Other stimulation-intensifiers:
  7. Wear a super-soft vagina plug during clitoral stimulation. (Size large is a good starting point IMO.) The squishy, body-safe silicone just creates this feeling of ultimate fullness inside, with G-squeeze’s scoop cupping the sensitive half of my vag.
  8. Or: Lightly rub or twist the nipples! Brush your fingertips over one or both tits, and you’ll likely feel both it and your clit throb harder.
  9. If it feels good, keep doing it while thinking about the hottest thing you can imagine. 🔥
  10. If you’re still not there, absolutely try a clit suction stimulator. Satisfyer Pro 2 is the most popular “suction” air pulsation toy of the last decade, and other folks find Womanizer fantastic, and my own favorite is the Zen Rose toy! (Comparison guide here.) How-to use a “suction” air pulse toy tips here: Basically, do use lubricant, start on a lower speed and work up, and kegel/clench or rub the mouth to add even more stimulation.
  11. All pleasure is good. Reaching “climax” shouldn’t create extra stress – enjoy everything you’re feeling the best you can, no worries if you’re not “getting there.” Keep doing whatever feels good for your bod.

  1. I strongly recommend the highly readable (shocking-but-true) All in Her Head, by oncologist Elizabeth Comen, chapter 11, “Sex,” for a summary of the misogyny rooted in the medical profession, with chapter 11 particularly focused on Victorian abuses, but encompassing before and beyond that, up to today.

  1. Based on my own experience with clitoral and vaginal orgasms, I believe that vaginal orgasms are caused by stimulating the internal part of the clitoris. So instead of apples and oranges, it’s two different parts of the same fruit.

    • Thank you for reading. Indeed, no metaphor is perfect. 🙂 I stand for fruit salad, lol.

It’s also possible that vaginal O’s – particularly “G-spot” orgasms – result from stimulation of the erectile tissue surrounding the urethra, as well as internal clitoral stim. Look at how the clitoral crura wrap around the right and left sides of the vagina, but the anterior (front) wall is where most people report the greatest G-spot responsiveness – and the urethra is what’s directly in front, with the junction of the clitoral crura, then, in front of the urethra. I really like how this image https://phallophilereviews.com/wp-content/uploads/Clitoris_3_D_-_Helen_OConnell.jpg shows the structures in a 3-D way, though it’d be sweet to find a 3-D diagram with major nerves depicted, too.

    • Like Felicity said it’s highly possible that G-spot stimulation is related to the clitoral nerves. This doesn’t account for vaginal orgasms caused by A or O spot or cervix stimulation.
