The NS Novelties Firefly 5″ Pleasures is a dildo you can also use as a glowstick—something I had no idea I wanted until I got one.
Before NS Novelties released the Firefly 5″ and 8″ Pleasures, (body-safe) glow-in-the-dark dildos were only available from very small (usually fantasy) toymakers.1 NS Novelties is smart to have begun releasing silicone dildos with previously fantasy-only traits: the glow-in-the-dark pigment that’s the big thing about the Firefly dildos, and also the softer silicone options of the ColourSoft series. Having more body-safe and affordable options is always a good thing. (But be careful not to buy Firefly “Smooth” dildos and plugs, which are made of porous TPE!)2
Light Up Your Bedroom
So how well do these dongs glow? Well, my 5″ is not flashlight-bright, but it’s very visible in a dark bedroom. I can even see it through a sheet. I like to stick it on my nightstand and use it as a glowstick when my partner and I have sex in the dark, just so I can look over and see a glowing, disembodied phallus. Mine glows a light blue, but it comes in pink too, if that’s your style.
But now for the big question: How well does it actually work for its intended use?
Silicone Firmness
Realistic suction-cup dildos tend to be made of fairly firm silicone, like I say in my Dildo Firmness Guide. The Firefly 5″ is no exception: it’s made of NS Novelties’ “firm” density just like the Colours Pleasures dildos.3 I’m grateful that the Firefly 5″ has a slight forward bent in the shaft, because a straight and firm shaft wouldn’t provide me with much G-spot stimulation. The hardness of the silicone is most pronounced in the coronal ridge.
If you like firmer toys plus realism, then the Firefly 5″ (or the 8″, or any Colours Pleasures dildo) will be a great toy for you. I personally find it a bit abrasive to thrust quickly; I have to use slower strokes to really enjoy the Firefly. This is why, overall, I like my ColourSoft dildo more: it’s the exact same shape as the Firefly, except the silicone is soft and squishy. But if you do want a softer toy that glows in the dark (and why not? it’s hella fun), then check out the BMS Addiction Luke or Brandon (my review here).
The Balls and Suction Cup
All of NS Novelties’ suction cups are strong; I’ve never had a problem with them sticking, and I’ve used them very hard. So I wasn’t surprised that the Firefly 5″ suction cup performed well.
I was a little surprised that the balls are smaller than those on most suction cup dildos. As someone who’s not a big fan of dildo balls, I was glad about this. The size of the base is very manageable when I want to wrap my hand around it and thrust. The balls don’t get in my way!
TL;DR: It’s a Hard, Glowing Cock for Just Over $20
The NS Novelties Firefly 5″ Pleasures dildo is a fun, body-safe, and inexpensive option. It has the dimensions of an exactly average-sized human cock, with a slightly protruding coronal ridge and a forward angle. These features, along with the fairly firm silicone, provide strong G-spot stimulation.
If you want to see the glow, get one here! Or get the larger 8″ Firefly here.
If you’re looking for something squishier, then I would definitely recommend the (also very affordable) ColourSoft dildos instead: I’m a huge fan of the ColourSoft 5″, which is the same shape as the Firefly 5″.
* * *
- For example, I have a Damn Average toy whose top half will glow OK after it’s exposed to sunlight. “Glow-in-the-dark” is a bit different from “florescent” or “UV-reactive”: Split Peaches does have some abstract dildos and a few butt plugs that are florescent.
- Though the Firefly 5″ and 8″ Pleasures are body-safe silicone, NS Novelties produces dildos and toys also named “Firefly” (like this and this) that are unsafe for extended use because they’re made from TPE, which can’t be fully sanitized. NS Novelties claims that these TPE insertables are “body-safe,” but TPE, while nontoxic, allows bacteria to flourish in its pores over time. In contrast, platinum cure silicone is microporous and hydrophobic, making it functionally nonporous. That means safe for long-term use, plus fully sanitizable by boiling, baking, or soaking in a 10%-bleach solution.
- See all the dildos in this search that don’t include “Soft” in the name.
Hi,
I have bought this item, however, I am skeptical of the glow in the dark. Is it 100% body safe?
Sure, the GITD pigment is fully embedded in the silicone. Tons of fantasy makers use glow pigments, and they’re *extremely* concerned with safety.
