Everyone’s heard the cliché “Appearances can be deceiving,” right? Well, the Avant D3 dildo by Blush Novelties has really brought the phrase’s meaning home for me.
The Avant D3 “Summer Fling” looks cute. (It even has a cutesy name.) The perfect lines of bright-colored silicone certainly catch your eye. But don’t be fooled: this dildo is not screwing around.
With its large head and serious texture, the Avant D3 may be overwhelming for some. It definitely made me slow down and reappraise my usual dildo-using technique.
Why? Well, first, there’s the Avant D3’s big, boxy head. When I received this toy, I noticed that its box said, “Avant D3 is perfect for those who crave girth.” I scoffed, since my idea of “girth” is somewhere around 2″ maximum diameter, while the Avant D3 claims a max. of 1.75″.1 Then I pulled it out of the box and realized that the head is noticeably larger than I was expecting. It may only be 1.75″ across when you look at it from the front, but the head is nearly 6″ around: definitely in the large category.
And it’s not just the size of the Avant D3’s head that makes using it an intense experience: it’s the shape too. It’s marketed as a G-spotting dildo, and I can see why. The D3’s top ridge really juts out. Plus it’s rounded so that all the pressure is concentrated in an area that’s only about an inch across. This should please folks who like focused G-spot/prostate-stimulating shapes.2 As someone who gets off more easily on uniformly broad and less-steeply-angled heads, the Avant D3 posed a challenge for me.
A big part of my problem is that the Avant D3 does not like to lean forward—even though it’s made of kinda-soft silicone. (See my Avant D5 review for details.) Unlike the D5 and D6, which are a consistent thickness throughout, the Avant D3 has a set of wavy ridges starting midshaft. These rounded creases make the Avant D3’s shaft flare outward, and stop me from bending the forward (or backward) much at all.
And though the D3 doesn’t have the curve I like, its large head alone would’ve made it a very usable G-spotting dildo—if it weren’t for one other problem I personally have with the lowest ridges.
You see those lip marks? Maybe you assumed the picture was a cute way to say I love the D3. NOPE. It’s a statement about lips: specifically, about how the Avant D3’s final ridges irritate my inner labia. When I have the Avant D3’s head situated where I want it for G-spot stim, thrusting the D3 makes those outward-angling ridges collide with my labia. Sure, lots of lube helps. But still, those wavy ridges are distracting when I want to go faster.
Obviously, your mileage may vary a lot. For example, people with smaller inner labia (or who aren’t trying to get over 5″ length) shouldn’t have this issue. And during anal use, some may find this last set of ridges stimulating in a good way.3 All in all, my thought on the ridges is that they make more sense in squishy dual-density silicone—remember that the Avant D3 is a firmer copy of the Real Nude Suko, whose soft outer layer is more forgiving.
So, yeah, I ended up not wanting to use the Avant D3 how I’d planned to, with all those ridges hitting the front wall of my vag. But…the Avant D3’s suction cup is so strong. The hollow in the base makes it probably the strongest suction cup dildo I own. (An impressive feat.) To remove the Avant D3 from the wall, I have to insert a nail and push down hard to break the seal. The suction cup has staying power.
Clearly, I couldn’t let this suction-cupped goodness go to waste; I had to find a way that the Avant D3 would work for me. The most obvious is: just flip the dildo 180 degrees, so that my fleshy inner labia aren’t getting in the way so much.
I ran through my list of possible suction cup dildo positions, trying to decide how to make this work. I ended up thinking that maybe I should revisit my dislike for both the “dildo-on-chair” and “ass-against-the-wall” options. Well, the first still didn’t do much for me, except for make me realize how filling the Avant D3’s head is (like I said, that angled head is not joking around). And as for the second postion, I found out that—under the right conditions—I could have some fun with the Avant D3, doggy style.4 Believe it or not, though the D3’s shape does very little for my G-spot, it seems made to stimulate the upper back wall of my vag.
Using the D3 this way is intense, but now in a good way. I go slow in my thrusts, because the back of the head is pressing against my cervix. The D3’s focused coronal ridge is so stimulating that I wonder why I haven’t tried this position with a dildo before. Meanwhile, the last set of ridges (you know, the ones I just bashed earlier in this review!) is brushing against my perineum—and I like the feeling. I think this experience is so enjoyable for me because usually I have very little control in doggy style, which I see as the most passive (common)5 PIV sex position.
So, as I grind against the Avant D3 while it enters me from behind, the experience is still a lot. On days when I’m really going for sensation to the max, I throw in the most rumbly bullet out there, the We-Vibe Tango. My orgasms this way aren’t the fastest, but they’re pretty mind-blowing in the end.
Final Words: So Smooth, Yet So Textured
I’m a huge fan of the new Avant dildos (three different shapes and six color schemes) as a whole because of their slightly soft, satiny silicone, all in gorgeous stripey colors. (Plus great suction cups!) I absolutely love my previous Avant toy, the D5 Sin City, with its more subtle shape that I think will work well for most people. In contrast, I’d only recommend the Avant D3 Summer Fling to people who are sure that they like go-big-or-go-home types of texture. Though the Avant D3 isn’t the best fit for me as a G-spotting dildo, I discovered that I enjoy using the Avant D3 suction-cupped to the wall, for doggy style to the max.

- Which would still make it a fairly large dildo, but not an enormous one.
- The Godemiche Ambit, Maia Kendall, Fun Factory Stronic G, and to some degree the Tantus Sport spring to mind.
- In a good way or a bad way, again, depending on you. I can’t say for sure about me, because the Avant D3’s head is way too big for me to fit inside my butt.
- If you’re looking for something to mount your suction cup dildo on for rear-entry positions, check out my impressions of the T.O.M. mount here, or get a Liberator Wing, which I would recommend.
- Hey, is there anyone out there who can make this wheelbarrow position work? I feel like one or both partners would need some gymnastic training.
So first thank you for the awesome content very informative and well presented, love it I have read a few of your reviews, was looking into the fantasy dildos and will keep doing more research, question how does one “warm up” for a bigger toy? What is it? I keep reading this term in reviews and I’m not sure what it means and if people are meaning the sane thing when they use it, it would be awesome if you could clarify and tell us how does this “warm up” get done to venture into something bigger or different or both why not.
Thank you.
Thanks so much!
That’s a good question. For different people “warming up” will be a little different, but generally the idea is to start with a smaller toy, a size that you’re always comfortable with. Warming up can also include clit play. The vagina expands when aroused, and anal sphincters dilate too when they have something inside. The key is to go slow, and to stop if you feel pain. I wrote an article on this a few months ago that basically says these things, and that you probably don’t want to jump up in size more than a third of an inch diameter (1″ circumference) when you’re sizing up. (Maybe even less if you’re talking about really firm or really textured toys, which can be a challenge.)
I hope this helps.
Edit: Also, lube! Lube! Lube!
Thank you for the information on this i would love to try one of these i love reading about dildos and vibrators because that is what we use on a regular basis we use lots of Lube to
You’re welcome! I still have so much fun reading other people’s toy reviews. And lube is always good!
