Labia stimulation. Everyone with a vulva has two pairs of labia (Latin for “lips”) down there, surrounding their clitoris, urethra, and vagina. So, how is it that *almost* no one talks about the labia specifically, when it comes to sex advice or sex toy reviews?
Of course “cliteracy” is hugely important, since 75% of cis women need their clitoris stimulated to reach orgasm. But it makes me wonder: Does focusing on just the clit also erase uniquely vulva-powered pleasure – now that the clit is widely recognized as homologous to the penis? I mean, What about all our other good bits?
As a long-time wand🪄 lover, I know damn well how fuller vulva coverage can elevate an orgasm. Thinking about it now, I’m reclaiming my pussy lips – which a former partner once called “roast beef flaps,” but then hurriedly…tried to maybe reframe his statement, saying: “Not that that’s a *bad* thing” – as a source of satisfaction, and an important part of getting fully stimulated.

What are the Labia?
“Lips of the vagina” is what the medical term labia vaginalis means literally. The two pairs of labia fuse around the clitoris (glans) and under the vagina:

I call ’em the inner labia, and the outer labia. [The Latin medical terms are labia minora (minor or lesser labia) and the labia majora (major or greater labia).]
Individual labia look so different! From all-encompassing outer labia, to pouching & flaring & draped inner labia with more subtle outer lips. Here’s an art gallery of real labia cast by Vulvarium:
Though the outer labia are important (they keep everything together!), it’s the inner labia that feel like so much more, to me. Especially where these labia pouch out on both sides of the vagina – that’s the really good part, where the feeling lives.
Unfortunately, every vulva diagram I’ve located has very minimal, small inner labia – always spread wide open like an oyster. And it’s normal to have smaller inner labia. But the representation of bigger flaps is seriously lacking – this is a massive oversight, since having big bulging inner labia is normal too. Labia Stimulation How-to
This my method – check it out, and feel free to adapt to your own style. This is just one technique to explore. It relies on a vibrator (use good water-based or hybrid lube for comfort), but having a partner use their fingers can work well too 🫲.
- Rub down one inner lip, massaging lightly. For me, this is always the left one, since I’m right-handed (and the left labium is bigger in my case). If you have pouched labia with legs closed (it me; kinda like this life-cast sculpt), then you can focus on the bottom curve of your droplet-shaped folds. Oooh!
- Massage the opposite lip too; and alternate as feels good.
- As you focus on the labia to the left and right sides of the vaginal opening, massage freely, and begin to increase the pressure and speed.
- To heighten stimulation: either move your vibrator up, or angle the vibrator toward your belly, to vibrate under your clitoris too.
- Breathe in and enjoy your body’s signals & sensation.
- Clenching your pelvic floor muscles, as in kegels, can help move toward climax. You might also find yourself involuntarily clenching your legs & butt muscles, or locking your knees or pointing your toes, too. These are all normal results of arousal.
- If you’re not reaching climax in the time you want, move on to massaging / stroking the clitoris directly. Some folks will want a strong air pulse “suction” toy, like Satisfyer Pro 2 or Zen Rose, to finish up.
The inner labia are innervated partly by the perineal nerve, which also supplies the lower vagina (plus the lower major labia and the perineum = area between the vagina and anus).
So, stimulating your inner “flaps” can give a similar feeling to shallowing play, which is focusing stimulation at the vaginal mouth, its opening – not deeper inside.
Labia Vibrators + Clitoral Stroking – ×2 Sensation
Is it possible to orgasm from labia stimulation alone?
YES.
Is it as easy to orgasm from labia stimulation as clitoral stimulation?
NO, probably not – for *most* people.
For me, labia stimulation is part of a package experience – like an essential component inside a larger giftbox. (The best gift equaling full-body orgasm.)
With my labia’s positioning, labia stimulation is either: fantastic warmup (via direct labia contact with a vibrator) before I stroke my clit off, rubbing the same vibrator up-and-down over it: or an indirect effect, as my lips flare out and get massaged while I thrust a dildo.

Some vibrators work for focused labia sensation, and others achieve it by covering more space over the wider vulva:
My Top 4 Vibrators for Labia + Clit Stimulation
It’s true that nearly all clitoral vibrators can be repurposed as labia sex toys – everything except “clit suction” toys is versatile. (Clit suckers lose their intensity when not applied directly over the clitoris, they need a suction seal.) My personal favorites for labia play are:
Magic Wand – Classic
The Magic Wand vibrator silently opened the floodgates to fuller vulva sensation, starting in the 1970s. Via its “body massager” big head, a wand just covers more ground (that is, more flesh!🎉).
Of all *body-safe* Magic Wands, the Rechargeable works best for me, though the Magic Wand Plus is the strongest (and some people like the most power).
It can easily stimulate not only the visible clit, but the buried clitoral “shaft” and bulbs, the urethra & its erectile tissue, and the labia. I even feel vibration waves traveling into my butt with the highest Magic Wand speeds!
As an ALL-OVER stimulator, a full Wand doesn’t precisely target the labia’s specific textures. If you want to home in more, try a smaller sex toy, like:
Bullet Vibrators for Labia Stimulation
“Bullet vibrators” are a smaller tube that’s lighter to hold vs. a wand vibrator. Importantly, they have a focused tip / point / lipstick slant to apply concentrated vibration, to a small zone.
I’d suggest the Intense Travel Mini bullet for “packs a punch” power in targeting the labia – or the Swan Maximum Bullet for deeper, more adjustable range to your labial vibration. The Intense Travel bullet does not have low speeds – in contrast, the Max. Bullet is rumbly & gentle to start, then gets stronger. Either small vibrator’s rounded tip will fit magically well into my pouching flaps.
Swan Era Wand
But, as a committed rubber-offer, I do like a slightly wider and less-pointy head for my clit massagers and my labia toys too. The Swan Era wand is so very adjustable, and my pussy just glows in the light of deep rumbly vibration + wide speed range. The handle is super-ergonomic in this one, which is why I’m using it a lot more than the Petite Travel Wand now.
My best-of: Start with labia rubbin’ on the Era wand, then bring its smooth cap up right under my clit, *then* slide my new prized-possession G-spot dildo the Solina Spotta in for a dual stimulation fun-time.
Clit Grinder Toys are Labia Toys, Too
Grinder toys / a.k.a. clitoral grinding toys are a hot new trend starting a couple years ago, and calling them “clit grinders” majorly oversimplifies. With 5-inch-wide monster grinders like the Tentacle Grinder, you are massaging everything down below.
Seriously, if you have inner labia that protrude at all when your legs are slightly opened, then you can rub-hump them off, homing in on a full grinding orgasm that involves clitoris, clitoral hood, labia (major and minor), urethra, chode, and vaginal opening if you got a grinder toy with any sort of rising bulge. (Fantasy grinders have all the texture options, here – and some are geometric or abstract, not all are monsters, creatures, etc.)
CUV Complex PLUS – Why Not Include Labia Minora, Too?
The “CUV complex” is a newer term (coined ca. 2014) that aims to describe the mechanism of female / vulva-having orgasm, as a connected network of clitoris + urethra + vagina. (All three are likely involved in what we call G-spot orgasms.)
The full, 3-D clitoris was first imaged only in 2010 – yes, that’s right, humanity developed nuclear weapons 66 whole years before we1 figured out what the clitoris actually involves. So it’s no surprise that other pleasure zones are overlooked, too.
Given that the labia are innervated by a branch of the pudendal nerve, the same as the rest of the CUV complex, and are obviously attached to it… why are they excluded from this orgasmic grouping?
The inner labia, after all, change just as the clit and vagina do when aroused. The labia vaginalis:
- aid by spreading vaginal lubrication,
- they get engorged by more blood-flow too just like the clitoris,
- and can double or even triple in size (in some people, not all).
The labia minora are a crucial part of intra-vaginal sex as they spread open and help the vagina dilate: “During sexual stimulation, the labia minora contributes to the arousal of the whole vestibule area and clitoris.” And even when you’re not engaging in vaginal play, the labia can add feeling and help with clitoral orgasm.
In short: Too bad CUVL is such a crappy acronym. 😞 And CUVaL definitely sounds like an overpriced pharmaceutical. The scientific community may need your help – lemme know if you can come up with a better arrangement of C, U, V, and L in the comments! 🎊🌠
NOTE
- And in particular, one urologist named Helen O’Connell, who discovered how medical texts simply ignored 😶 the female-specific pelvic floor including *gasp* the clitoris, when she attented med. school in the 1980s.
