Velvet Thruster Mini Review: Thrusting Dildo & Compact Sex Machine

My ears were still ringing from the orgasms the Velvet Thruster Mini Teddy had given me; its base was slipping from my hand. I thought, “Maybe I should just give up reviewing sex toys…I don’t know if it gets better than this.” Then I rolled over and promptly fell asleep. The Mini Thruster lay next to me.

This mini Velvet Thruster (plus an awesome add-on) were my best sex toy experience ever. For realistic penetration if you want a smaller, handheld toy, this is the best option—out of so many self-propelled options. It’s lazy (and potentially hands-free!) screwing. The Velvet Thruster Mini is a little short, and doesn’t have quite the longevity of a full-size sex machine, are my only qualms. I’ve had sweet experiences with the Velvet Thruster Mini, which I’ll share here; then tell you about its pros and cons, vs. other thrusting options.

[Note: This review originally reflected the original Velvet Thruster Mini “Teddy,” now called Teddy TX by its maker. I’ve added in info about the new Teddy GS G-spot model too! —Updated Jan. 2021]

Velvet Thruster Mini’s Features

Affectionately nicknamed “Teddy,” Velvet Thruster Mini is a shorter version of Velvet Thruster Jackie (now discontinued), with important upgrades. I love supporting a company that actually listens to critiques, like Velvet Cock did with these changes:

  • Mini Teddy’s motor casing is smaller, making it so much easier to hold & maneuver during play.
  • Plus suction cup base. Teddy will stick to very smooth surfaces well.
  • It’s quieter. Especially on the lower thrust speeds, Teddy’s noise can be concealed.
  • The control buttons are more accessible & simpler. An up and a down arrow on the front are easy to reach, with the power button on the reverse side so you don’t hit it by accident.
  • It’s more water-resistant. The original Velvet Thrusters had large air vents on the side that water could seep into. The Velvet Thruster Mini—though it’s not totally waterproof and definitely not submersible—is effectively splashproof. You do need to wash downward in the sink with the silicone flap closed: do not soak this toy.
Velvet Thruster comparison
Teddy, top; Jackie, bottom.

With 6 different thrusting speeds, up to 125 strokes per minute, and just over 2″ thrust length, Teddy still offers a lot in the way of fast penetration. (I’ve definitely never had a lover who could keep up 125 strokes per minute!) Jackie, the earlier model, has an additional 4 speeds (for a total of 10) and goes faster. So if you want your thrusting to be balls to the wall, go Jackie. But personally, even as someone who enjoys speedy screwing, I find Jackie’s top 3 speeds a bit…over the top. See my YouTube vid comparing the motion of both Velvet Thrusters here.

The real downside to Velvet Mini Teddy over Jackie or the new Thruster Plus line? It’s shorter, almost an inch and a half less insertable length. And the mechanical core extends all the way up into Teddy’s head, so the shaft isn’t flexible. Teddy feels harder, even though its silicone coating is smooth and silky. Note: Velvet Thruster now has a longer Teddy XL, which is a full inch longer (but the same average girth).

By itself, the Velvet Thruster Mini Teddy is nice. Letting it take me is a rush, a cascade of feel-good chemicals in my brain. I truly feel healthier and happier afterward.

But you know what I love just as much as thrusting? Soft silicone. It’s yielding, like human skin is. Whereas Teddy is harder than any hard-on. (And its ridge is not geared for G-spot stimulation.) That’s why I started thinking about how I could make this great toy excellent. Above and beyond. WORLD-CLASS.1

Self-Thrusting VixSkin = Ultimate Lazy Realism

A couple sessions into testing the Velvet Mini thrusting dildo, I started thinking. “If only it was softer,” I pondered. “Hmm.” Then I went about my day.

Half an hour later, it clicked. I remembered: Super Smash Cache had figured this out already! What I needed was a soft silicone penis sheath. And what could fit the bill better than the VixSkin extenders?

VixSkin squishy silicone extenders come in three sizes: I wondered if the small (Ride On) might be too thin for Teddy’s average (1.5″) width. And to me, the Colossus seemed…just a smidge too wide for fast thrusting. So I went with the VixSkin Holster: still a pretty damn thick toy (2⅛” wide), right within my comfort zone for thickness.

👉 Update: If you’re looking for a cheaper silicone sheath option, check out the Boneyard one here! The ridge isn’t quite as luxe, but hell if it isn’t less than a third the price of VixSkin.

So I stick a Holster sheath on the Velvet Thruster Mini Teddy, and…I’m coming all over, almost immediately.

If you’re able to handle above-average toys and you crave lazy, realistic penetration, this “VixThrust” pairing (bundled here) is sweet. The only thing better is investing in a full-sized sex machine, with a soft platinum silicone dildo attachment: my top machine pick will run you about $472 (when you buy it with my favorite soft fleshy dildo), vs. the Vixen bundle’s $265 list price. (But save 10% on either with code FELICITY.)

The sex machine is less likely to stall during use, and you don’t need to guide it by hand, plus it goes up to 195 thrusts per minute with fully adjustable speed changes (via remote) vs. Teddy’s 120-ish strokes once the sheath is on. So you are definitely getting extra benefits by spending an extra $200 on a real sex machine over a handheld thruster.

Like all Vixen Creations VixSkin products, the Holster sheath’s silicone is super soft and glides so smoothly with good thick lube. This squish, with Velvet Thruster Mini’s firm core underneath, creates that balance of soft + hard that characterizes dual-density silicone dildos. Two layers together are so popular because they feel more realistic, like skin + erect tissue.

I said in my original thrusting dildo guide section on Jackie that I found myself talking to it, the thrusting motion felt so lifelike. This is that, then some. The Velvet Thruster-VixSkin combo makes me think I should start recording audio porn, with the amount of filth that comes out of my mouth while using it.

I like lying back and taking this combo missionary style, but sometimes I want it to be totally hands-free. I brace the Velvet Thruster Mini against a chunky pillow. Or, more conveniently, I stick the suction cup base on a dildo mount, for easier missionary or for cowgirl-style riding too. Either way—as long as I’m not rushed!!!—I’m 100% satisfied. Almost as satisfied as that one time at the sex club—a rare occurrence in my life.

Adding a silicone attachment to Velvet Thruster Mini Teddy can slightly cut down on the stroke length and thrust speed of the Thruster alone—because Holster’s thickness requires more force to thrust. The Thruster’s performance largely depends on angle and positioning. (One day I’m gonna write a book called Dildo Physics: The Secret Life of a Sex Toy Tester, and that work will definitely have chapters on suction cup dildo positioning and thrusting dildo usage. 😄) When I angle the VixThrust combo sharply forward, VixSkin Holster’s fat, protruding head will catch on my pubic bone, and the Velvet Thruster’s stroke length will only be about an inch.

I enjoy this because OMG, the soft squishy head feels like it’s slowing down for me, taking its time and devoting itself to my G-spot. If I want Velvet Mini Teddy to return to a normal normal stroke length, almost 2″, then I need to stop making Holster’s head crash into my pelvic bone and cervix by not angling it forward so much! Making it slam into your interior walls is how you will likely may this toy stall out. Just press the power button to start it up again.

Even when I am pushing Velvet Thruster Mini Teddy to its limits, making it pound me as hard as it’ll go with a heavy silicone sheath on top, its range of motion is superior to the thrusting of multiple other compact thrusting sex toys I’ve tried: most notably the XR Thunderplugs Thrusting Plug (whose motion is more like a wiggling, half an inch long) and the Pipedream Fantasy for Her thruster (only 2 thrust speeds and 1″ thrust length, tops, with no force applied).

Velvet Thruster Teddy GS

Velvet Thruster released a G-spot sculpture thruster recently, with all the same features as original Teddy—but with a hooked head:

Mini Teddy original (TX) on top; Njoy Pure Wand big bulb pushing in; and Teddy GS below.

I like this shape—Teddy GS—for light massage. It’s pretty focused, that ridge really sticks out and hooks around! That makes it lock into place above the pelvic bone inside the vagina, to massage the G-spot area more intensely. It stays put really well for me, better than the Velvet Teddy original, because of that hook: tries to thrust outside my vag less when it’s not wedged into place.

The Teddy GS’s head “corners” are a touch boxy, which makes me want more lube after a few minutes. It kind of reminds of an alien head, to be honest: a peaceable, pleasure-giving one, luckily.

Pictured under the Njoy Pure Wand’s mighty G-spot bulb, super-pressure. Overall, I think it’s a good design, though the focused nature of the ridge isn’t my personal style. As a sensitive user, I find it overstimulating after a bit vaginally (I like broader, realistic ridges because they don’t hook like this). It’s awesome when it chills out in the lower inch of my vagina (avoiding my sensitive G-spot area) and I angle it up so the bulge under the head is rubbing up and down on my clit hood.

Charging & Technical Details

The Velvet Thruster Mini’s charging port is a small hole in the base, underneath the up & down control arrows. Air also vents out this hole, and it’s covered by a small silicone flap that should be closed when you wash the toy. (To be extra safe, wash downward, with Teddy’s head pointing into your sink, to avoid water entering the hole.) Teddy has somewhere between one and two hours battery life2

per charge on mid- to high speeds.

It is possible, but difficult, to make Teddy stall. You have to be putting a good bit of force against the machine: This happens to me occasionally when I’m blocking Teddy’s full range of motion by trying to stick it on a dildo mount while it’s still screwing me. Power the Velvet Thruster back up, and it’ll start thrusting as normal.

(This is much easier to deal with than that time I was testing the Maia Max thruster, and I had it suction-cupped to the floor at just the right angle finally, when I realized that (1) leaning forward a lot and (2) clenching too hard pre-orgasm would make it stall out! I was groping backward for the buttons to keep going!)

Teddy’s accordion folds, between the shaft and base proper, are tight and will rub against your skin if you insert Teddy 5 inches deep or more. Sometimes this is nice, in that the folds rub against my clit when I angle Teddy upward.

When I close my legs tight around Teddy—especially when it’s on a higher speed—this texture can feel abrupt against my inner labia. (More lube, please!!!) I can avoid this by keeping my legs slightly farther apart. This is one of the main reasons why I use a sheath, besides the softer feel, so my labia don’t get tweaked if I angle the Thruster too much. And anyone who’s looking for *deeper* penetration (6″ and up) will need to put a sleeve on Teddy:

Overall Thoughts / Ranking

I can’t discredit the other amazing self-thrusting options: how the Fun Factory Stronic G’s head tugs on my G-spot at rapid speed, or how easy the remote control makes changing speeds on Maia Max & Monroe thrusting vibrator. If you want a self-propelled toy that’s least likely to break, I do recommend a Fun Factory Stronic hands-down (if you’re not willing to get a full-sized machine). Velvet Thrusters are prone to breaking, but are under a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty, and getting a replacement is easy.

But the Velvet Thruster Mini Teddy offers a longer stroke length than the Stronic toys, plus the Thruster has that realistic shape in silky silicone. It’s got a good motor and twice as many steady thrust speeds as any comparable handheld toy.3

And Teddy’s shape looks realistic—but it feels more realistic (girthy too!) when you partner it with a VixSkin soft sheath, because the Thruster by itself is harder than a real erection.

When I first got it (before I got an actual sex machine), this VixThrust combo brought me so much pleasure. Easy, realistic penetration—with Teddy and the sheath, I’ve really felt like I’m living the dream, and was so fortunate to have discovered this toy. I’m a phallophile, what can I say, and the Velvet Thruster Mini is amazing for all those times when I wanted to be screwed with less effort on my part. (Besides cleanup afterward!)

NOTES

  1. Am I enthusiastic about this??? Could be!!!
  2. I lose track of time while using the Velvet Thruster Mini! Definitely over an hour, and I’m working Teddy’s motor hard.
  3. Compared to the mini Velvet Thruster’s 6 speeds, these toys have 3 steady speeds: Maia Max/Monroe, NS Inya Deep Stroker, and Evolved Infinite Thrusting Machine. The Pipedream Fantasy for Her Thruster has only 2.
