Fun Factory Volta Vibrator Review

The Fun Factory Volta confuses me. It both fascinates me and irritates me—sometimes at the same time.

It’s all on those “fluttering” tips, you see. The Volta features two flexible silicone flaps that end in pointed tips. Their motion (combined with powerful vibration) excites me. Wow, do they really flicker back and forth! So much so that I had to make a cheesy graphic comparing them to other fluttering creatures:

And every time I start using the Fun Factory Volta, I’m sure I’m going to orgasm in under a minute. But, unfortunately, Volta’s tips turn out to be too pinpoint for my tastes, too pointy—I just like it broader! For a better tongue-flipping experience, I get more out of the Zalo Hero and its heavier, single extension.

Here’s a typical scenario of what happens between me and the Volta:

Minute 1: I turn on the power. I decide to start a level below the “Start” setting, which is already pretty strong. I apply the Volta to my clit and adjust the toy’s tips. I’m instantly turned on. This is gonna be great.

Minute 2: I think about what an awesome review I’m gonna write of the Volta. I’ll definitely orgasm within 30 seconds here.1

Minute 3: Wait, what am I supposed to be doing with these fluttering tips? The top one is poking my (buried) clit in a weird way. Maybe I’ll have better luck if I adjust these things somehow.

Minute 4: I’ve done some digging around with the tips, trying to position them in a way that’ll work with my vulva. Maybe I’ll turn it up a speed.

Minute 5: Hmm, I think I’ll just put the top tip underneath my clit rather than above it. That’s where I usually like bullet vibes anyway. Now the top tip is angled sideways, folded over into one inner labium, while the bottom one is wiggling toward the mouth of my vag and putting some pressure under my urethra. This could be good.

Minutes 6–8: OMG my clit is throbbing. I AM GONNA COME SO HARD.

Minute 9: Wait, this isn’t happening.

Minute 10: Maybe I should move it back farther.

Minute 11: I guess this feels good?

Minute 12: I’m gonna prop it up on a pillow and see what’s going on on Twitter. Also, these fluttering tips kinda hurt.

Minutes 13–20: I now know how various people feel about several other toys/what’s going on in their apparently more interesting lives. I still haven’t had an orgasm with the Volta yet, though. I guess I should just stick this thing in my vagina…or something.

Minute 21: Still nope, also not doing much for me. Where’d my new fave bullet vibe go? I think I’ll try the Volta on my nipples while I’m doing that.

Minute 22: Aaaah this is an awful idea, it’s even more grating on my nipple than on my clit! (*turns Volta off*—end sequence)

The fact is, the Volta’s flappy bits create such an unusual sensation that I don’t quite know what to do with them. No matter how I reposition them, they just don’t provide the pressure I need. Plus, after I use the Volta for a while, the fluttering movement gets to be bothersome. (Especially the potentially clit-jabbing front tip.)

Individual sensitivity varies a lot, of course: for example, I would absolutely never use a toy like the Zumio (it’s too pinpoint), but others love it. Still, I can’t help but think that even for people who like focused clit stimulation, the Volta’s pointed, bendable flaps are going to be hit-or-miss. And I absolutely would not recommend it as an alternative to a wand vibe because the shape is totally different. That gap in the middle of the tips means the Volta isn’t broadly stimulating.

It’s a shame because the Volta has some real power. It’s a strong and rumbly vibrator, featuring six different rumbly “intensities” (which are akin to steady speeds) plus six patterns. The starting speed—the third-strongest intensity—is already more than enough for me.

Of course I tried other techniques with the Volta after I realized it’s a failure with my clit. Splitting the tips farther apart allows you to use the Volta as dual-stimulating vibe—maybe.

The split distance is about three inches apart only when the tips aren’t moving. Fire up the Volta, though, and it’s difficult to keep those fluttering tips separated much more than an inch and half. As someone with a shorter clit-to-vag distance, I can get the back flap inserted fully into my vagina while the front one twitches over my clit. But…the Volta’s position never seems quite right. I’m constantly fiddling, trying to figure out where each tip is. I’m sure a lot of this issue is that the front tip impacts my clit in an even more pinpoint way than before—which I absolutely hate, but which other people with clits may really enjoy.

And as for using the Volta as a stroker…maybe. I lubed up an average-sized dildo, and the Volta’s split tips do glide across it nicely, with no problems. But the surface area that the tips cover isn’t broad like the typical stroker. Fun Factory suggest that the Volta is “a great addition to blowjobs”—I’m betting because most penis owners will also want more pressure than the Volta can provide by itself.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the Fun Factory Volta fails for me because its tips don’t provide wide pressure. They flip and wiggle but don’t PRESS DOWN. I do agree that the Volta can “boost your arousal”: it turns me on, but then it disappoints me. More than that, especially on the higher settings, the Volta’s front tip likes to poke my clit in a way that would make me slap any lover who did the same.

Really, the Volta suffers from trying to do too much. One toy that can surround a clit or a penis, also bridge the distance between clit and vag, plus vibrate and flutter? It’s just too much to ask from those thin silicone flaps—for me, at least. If you have a more adventurous clit that doesn’t require firm or broad pressure, then it could work for you; I’ve seen others say that:

  1. they find it great for teasing;
  2. they like placing on the right and left of the clit (rather than underneath, which is what I need); and
  3. the flickering motion makes them “[reach] new heights of adoration.”

If you think your clit is more receptive to teasing and pinpoint stim than mine, then by all means, pick up a Volta. Otherwise, you’re probably safer spending your money on either (1) a proven clit toy like the We-Vibe Tango, Magic Wand, or Satisfyer Pro 2 Next Gen. or Womanizer Pro40; or (2) the most adjustable (plus powerful) dual-stimulating vibe on the market, the We-Vibe Nova.

  1. I’m not saying that speed means a really great sexual experience for everybody, but for me the easy, fast ones tend to build to even better ones.

  1. I have been curious about this toy for quite some time. I absolutely love clit toys and I do like the fluttering sensations can feel very nice, even though teasing. Eventually, I will have to get this toy and test it out. Thanks for writing the review.
